Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring a company's online content so that generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude — can accurately find, understand, and cite it when answering a user's question. Where traditional SEO optimises for a ranked list of links, GEO optimises for inclusion in a synthesised, conversational answer that the buyer never has to click through to a website to read.
For a cybersecurity firm, MSSP, or MSP, this matters because the AI-generated answer is often the entire interaction. If a buyer asks "what's the best MDR provider for a 50-person healthcare company in Australia" and an AI answer engine returns three named vendors, a firm that isn't one of those three has effectively lost the deal before their sales team ever hears about it. GEO is the discipline of making sure PayloadFoundry's clients are one of the named vendors in that answer, with accurate, current information attached to their name.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO and GEO share a foundation — both reward clear structure, real expertise, and technical correctness. But they optimise for different consumption patterns, and the tactics diverge in specific, practical ways.
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the top 10 blue links | Get cited or summarised in the AI-generated answer |
| Primary surface | Google, Bing search results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude |
| Success signal | Ranking position, click-through rate | Citation frequency, share of answer, brand mention accuracy |
| Content structure | Keyword-optimised long-form pages | Direct-answer paragraphs, structured Q&A, explicit entities |
| Technical layer | Meta tags, backlinks, page speed | Schema markup, entity clarity, crawlable structured data |
Why cybersecurity firms specifically need GEO
Technical buyers — CISOs, IT directors, and procurement teams evaluating security vendors — have shifted a meaningful share of their early-stage research to conversational AI tools. Asking ChatGPT or Perplexity "compare vendor A and vendor B for SOC 2 compliance" is faster than reading five landing pages, and it removes the perceived bias of vendor-authored content. That means a security firm's category positioning, pricing structure, and differentiators are increasingly being summarised — and sometimes misrepresented — by a model that has read whatever public content exists about them.
A firm with thin, unstructured, or outdated public content risks one of two outcomes: it's omitted from the AI's answer entirely, or the model states inaccurate information about its services because there was nothing better structured to draw from. Both outcomes cost pipeline. GEO is how PayloadFoundry closes that gap — deliberately, not by accident.
How PayloadFoundry does GEO
PayloadFoundry's GEO work is technical, not speculative. Every audit and optimisation pass covers the same six areas:
Schema markup
Organization, Service, Article, and FAQPage schema make it explicit to AI crawlers what an entity is, what it offers, and how its content is structured — reducing the model's need to infer.
Entity coverage
PayloadFoundry writes with your company name and product names stated explicitly and repeatedly, instead of "we" and "our solution." AI models cite what they can attribute clearly.
Direct-answer content structure
Every H2 poses a real question a buyer would ask. The paragraph directly beneath it answers that question in the first sentence, before any supporting detail — the pattern large language models extract most reliably.
FAQ formatting
Structured FAQ sections, marked up with FAQPage schema, map almost one-to-one onto the question-answer pairs AI answer engines are built to surface.
Comparison tables
Tables that compare named options across explicit criteria are some of the highest-citation content in AI answers — they're easy for a model to parse and easy to quote from directly.
Citation-friendly authoring
Specific numbers, named sources, and dated claims get cited more often than vague generalities. PayloadFoundry writes for the sentence-level unit an AI model would actually quote.
